Penny runs a business called 1803

1803 produce beautiful hand crafted knives and a range of leather accessories, including bags, scarves and throws all made from the biproduct of her family venison farm in Orange NSW. All 1803′s products are hand made using local Australian artisans. So you can feel good about the products, safe in the knowledge that it’s both a sustainable product and it’s helping support an Australian artisan renaissance.

After having worked with Penny on the film and website 1803.com.au it seemed like the right time to reflect on what 1803 was presenting to the world and what it meant to create such a proud business.

What’s your favourite thing about running your own business?

It is quite intoxicating being in a position to have an idea, develop it and suddenly be creating a beautiful object. Involvement in the full circle of small business offers great variety, an endless ‘to do’ list and developing business relationships with an amazing range of great people – so, creative ownership and people would be the stand-outs so far…

Where do you hope to see 1803 in the future?

I am holding my breath to get through the first year – it is a steep and unforgiving hill starting a small business that manufactures in Australia. I quietly hope that 1803 will grow organically and consistently to forge a small niche in the premium artisan market in Australia. I want to continue to make beautiful objects, work with great people and make a small but positive difference.
